Thom Pierce's "The Horsemen of Semonkong" - Turning heads across the world
October 13, 2017 - Everard Read JHB
The first exhibition of The Horsemen of Semonkong took place at CIRCA, Johannesburg in October 2016. Since then Pierce’s work has been shown around the world as part of award exhibitions and photographic festivals. It has been featured in print and online in various publications including Vogue, Esquire and The Guardian.
Invitations to exhibit his work at photography festivals have taken the series to Paris, Romania, Poland, Belgium, Spain, Brazil, USA and the prestigious Rencontres D’arles in France where it was selected as part of a digital exhibition that would run for the entirety of the festival. Notable artists who exhibited at the 2017 Arles festival included Annie Leibowitz, Gideon Mendel, Michael Wolf and Roger Ballen; making it an incredible experience for Pierce to have been selected to exhibit alongside such names.
As a winner of the Lensculture Emerging Talent Award, The Horsemen of Semonkong has been shown at numerous festivals worldwide and is included in their first major publication, “The Best of Lensculture”. Other highlights include winning a place in the Mondo Galleria exhibition in Madrid, a solo show in Germany and inclusion in a group show in Tokyo.
The series was also chosen as a finalist in the Magnum photography awards; an extremely prestigious and influential photographic agency, recognized globally for its contemporary depictions of candid life around the world. For Pierce, to be a finalist is a tremendous achievement for himself as the finalists and winners are exhibited together. In conjunction to receiving this award, artists are afforded the opportunity to exhibit at the Photographer’s Gallery, London; a world renown photographic venue.
In November, 2017 the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize Exhibition will open at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Included in the exhibition will be the portrait of Thapelo Moiloa and his dog, Lima, from The Horsemen series. For the artist this is a true privilege; not only as he was selected from over 5,500 candidates, but he has now been included in one of the most influential exhibitions held within the photographic calendar.
