The notion of adoption, inspiration, or cross-pollination is as old as art itself; in translating, one learns to grasp and value the method of the studied artist, their manner of style, their hues, and one gains a sense of relative value. Interpreting does not assist with perception, but rather with highlighting how something can be expressed, focusing on the aesthetic principles of space, line, shape, colour, texture and form.
Bronwen Findlay’s exhibition Painting Hokusai and Other Worlds (2018) is concerned above all with the materiality of paint. She works with and manipulates her medium, oil paint, allowing its lustrous texture and layers of colour to envelop the subject matter.
A number of these paintings are interpretations of the images Hokusai used in his woodcut prints, made in the early 19th Century. Findlay’s oil paintings are of a different process, medium and scale to the prints, but Hokusai’s flowers, birds and landscapes have become part of her painterly world. Birds and flowers have always featured in Findlay’s work and so once again flora and fauna emerge from these painterly surfaces. These paintings, regardless of their size, evoke an intimate visual world.
