CURATOR'S CHOICE | Zander Blom

Selected as the next iteration of Curator’s Choice, Zander Blom’s work speaks to the continued relevance of abstraction in South Africa today. His practice occupies a compelling space between order and disruption, using abstraction not only as a visual language, but as a way of thinking—questioning how images are made, experienced, and understood.

Blom is a prominent South African artist known for his dynamic and experimental approach to painting. Now based in Cape Town, he has become an important figure in both the local and international art scene. His practice spans painting, drawing, and photography, often exploring different configurations of line, shape, and form.

Drawing on the legacy of modernist abstraction, Blom’s compositions are playful yet rigorous, with shapes and marks repeating rhythmically across the picture plane. In his paintings, modular gestures and precise lines establish shifting formal relationships.

“I look at what I do today as a kind of science of the picture plane. I’m perpetually trying to solve new problems, and creating new problems to try and solve.”

We are privileged to present three works from the artist’s collection that have not been seen before. Concurrently, our Cape Town gallery is exhibiting selected works by Zander Blom throughout the month of February.
