TALIA RAMKILAWAN - A Perfect Practice
Aug 14 – Sep 6, 2025

Everard Read is proud to present A Perfect Practice, a new body of work by South African artist Talia Ramkilawan.

Talia Ramkilawan’s latest body of work is an evocative meditation on process, emotional repetition, and the imperfect rhythm of healing. Created using her distinctive hessian and crochet technique, the works are layered with themes of grief, detachment, tenderness, and self-reclamation.

Rather than offering resolution, this exhibition explores the quiet persistence of being what it means to endure, unravel, and begin again. It reflects on the in-between states: after loss, during heartbreak, and in the tentative emergence of joy. Ramkilawan embraces the complexity of these experiences without seeking closure, presenting a body of work that is at once deeply intimate and widely resonant.

A Perfect Practice resists perfectionism and certainty, instead foregrounding the gentle, ongoing labour of self-return. Ramkilawan speaks of it as “taking a few steps back to myself but also taking steps forward” a sentiment that encapsulates the exhibition’s cyclical, grounding quality. Woven through the works is an unassuming humour and warmth that tempers vulnerability with levity.

This is not a quest for control, but a soft and deliberate act of tending an artistic ritual of making and unmaking that holds space for ambiguity, tenderness, and emotional truth.
