XAKASA NOMANDLA - Rites of Remembering
Jul 31 – Aug 31, 2025

“South Africa has been well served artistically by visual chroniclers of township life. Artists such as David Mogano, Ephraim Ngatane, Durant Sihlali and George Pemba have, along with many others, shown us the multifarious facets of life in an urban setting. Very few artists of any stature have done the same for rural villagers and to my mind the finest of these, and a seriously neglected artist, is Xakasa Nomandla.

Nomandla painted with loving accuracy the minutiae of day-to-day existence in the villages and countryside of the Transkei in the last quarter of the 20th century.

He chronicled births, baptisms, weddings and funerals. He painted domestic dramas and small cataclysms like floods and fires. He showed us cattle being dipped and sheep being shorn, beer drinking and children going to school – a world now largely changed by technology and modern communications but frozen in time by an autodidact whose instinctive use of colour and composition are masterly. He should be celebrated as one of our finest folk painters.”
