16th edition of FNB Art Joburg
Sep 7 – Sep 10, 2023

Everard Read to show at the 16th annual FNB Art Joburg with a bold, eclectic mix of South Africa’s finest contemporary artists.

Africa’s oldest commercial gallery, Everard Read, has been a part of FNB Art Joburg since its inception almost two decades ago. This annual gathering of the finest art, creators, cultural commentators and buyers from across the continent, and indeed, the globe, has become a standout event on the Joburg creative and social calendar.

As always, the work that Everard Read will be showing across the fair, which takes place at Sandton Convention Centre from 8 – 10 September 2023, will be representative of the highly sought-after, award-winning artists that the gallery represents.

This year, for the first time, one of Everard Read Johannesburg’s curators, Stephanie Le Roy, will be responsible for the brand’s representation at the fair. “It’s incredibly exciting to see such excellent curatorial talent flex muscles on a global platform”, says Everard Read Chairman, Mark Read. As Le Roy explains, “From beaded works to large sculptures and paintings from both established and up-and-coming artists, what we’ll have on offer is a smorgasbord of the best. We’ve put together an offering of exceptional art that ranges from the highly intellectual to the seriously enjoyable”.

A new super-sized iteration of Deborah Bell’s much-celebrated Hieros Gamos sculpture is one such highlight. It will take centre stage in the fair’s MAX section, which is where visitors will be able to see large scale works from the various galleries on the show.

Democratic Republic of Congo-born and Joburg-living Thonton Kabeya currently has a significant solo show at Wits Art Museum (WAM). In tandem with this, Everard Read’s stand at FNB Art Joburg, will offer a focus on his engaging, multi-layered art too.

Other pieces to watch out for from the gallery include a triumphant new mixed media work from the 2020 Standard Bank Young Artist award winner Blessing Ngobeni. Likewise, there will be paintings from the award’s 2022 recipient, Lady Skollie, and her contemporaries, Brett Seiler, Teresa Firmino, Liza Grobler and Tamlyn Blake. The latter’s new acrylic endeavours are a departure from her much-loved newspaper tapestries but are no less exciting.

Knock-out sculptures to expect come from the exacting hands of Atang Tshikare, Githan Coopoo, Neill Wright, Brett Murray, Michael MacGarry and Rina Stutzer.

As always works by industry legends like Gerhard Marx, Nandipha Mntambo, Sanell Aggenbach and Wayne Barker will attract attention, but it is also exciting to see a new generation of artists like Tafadzwa Tega and Katlego Tlabela strutting their artistic stuff too.
